Tape & Glue Workholding

A budget-friendly workholding method that makes projects previously impossible to execute now easily achievable.
This is the cheapest alternative to a vacuum or magnetic table.

Types of mounting tapes:

  • Yellow tape – very high adhesion, high-temperature resistance. Excellent for demanding high-temperature machining conditions.

  • Pink tape – very high adhesion, coolant resistant. Ideal when working with coolants and emulsions.

  • Green tape – low adhesion, best for large sheet metal parts. Allows for easy removal of the workpiece after machining – especially recommended for large-format machining.

Instructions for mounting a workpiece to the table using tape and cyanoacrylate glue

  1. Degreasing the table
Thoroughly degrease the surface of the table where the workpiece will be mounted. You can use mineral spirits or another suitable degreasing agent.
  2. Degreasing the workpiece
Also degrease the workpiece where the tape will be applied, using the same agent.
  3. Applying the tape
  • Apply the tape to the degreased workpiece.
  • Separately, apply the tape to the degreased table.

Applying cyanoacrylate glue
Apply a thin layer of cyanoacrylate glue between the tapes (on the tape on the table and on the tape on the workpiece). Using pink tape (optional)
If you are using pink tape:

  • Apply glue to the tape on the table.
  • Apply an activator to the tape applied to the workpiece.
This reduces the curing time to just a few seconds.

Note on the amount of glue
Use an appropriate amount of glue – too much glue and high-adhesion tape on a rigid workpiece can make it very difficult to detach the part from the table later. Testing on a sample
Before the actual mounting, it is best to test the entire process on a sample workpiece to determine the correct amount of glue and tape. Removing the workpiece after machining

  • After machining, detach the workpiece by gently tapping it with a plastic mallet or another soft tool smaller than the workpiece.
  • In special cases, the workpiece can be pried from underneath, e.g., through the T-slots.
  • Then remove the tapes from both the workpiece and the table.
