Product description

HYPERCUT Z2 solid carbide ball nose end mill

Two flutes · Alnovz3 coating · for steel, stainless steel and cast iron

HYPERCUT is a two-flute solid carbide ball nose end mill with an Alnovz3 coating. Its rounded tip has a radius R equal to half the cutting diameter. The family includes different cutting diameters, shank diameters and overall lengths.

The tool is intended for machining centres, CNC milling machines and engraving machines equipped with a suitable spindle and tool holder. Steel, stainless steel and cast iron are its main workpiece materials. Choose the size from the workpiece geometry and the complete designation of the selected variant.

Dimension range: cutting diameter Ø1–20 mm, ball radius R0.5–10 mm and shank diameter Ø3–20 mm. Overall lengths in this family are 50, 60, 75, 100 or 150 mm. Use the size selector to check the available dimension combinations.

1. Tool construction and Alnovz3 coating

The end mill has a solid carbide body, a cylindrical shank and a ball nose cutting end. Its two cutting edges form the geometry designated Z2. Fully ground cutting edges and a multilayer Alnovz3 coating are features of this family.

FeatureSpecification
Tool typeBall nose end mill
SeriesHYPERCUT
Tool materialVHM — solid carbide
Number of flutes2 — Z2
Tip geometrySpherical; cutting diameter equals 2 × R
CoatingMultilayer Alnovz3
Cutting edgesFully ground
ShankCylindrical; diameter depends on the selected size

Radius R describes the spherical tip. When comparing tools, read it together with the cutting diameter: an R3 mm tip corresponds to a Ø6 mm cutting diameter. Shank diameter is a separate dimension, shown immediately before D in the size designation.

2. Workpiece materials

HYPERCUT is primarily intended for steel, stainless steel and cast iron. When selecting cutting conditions, consider the exact material grade and condition, followed by the tool diameter and the planned operation.

Material groupApplication
General and carbon steelMilling steel components with cutting conditions selected for the material grade.
Alloy steelMachining alloy steel parts; consider the condition of the workpiece material when setting parameters.
Stainless steelOne of the main application groups for HYPERCUT.
Cast ironOne of the main application groups for HYPERCUT.
Copper alloysAn additional application group; select conditions for the particular alloy.

Alnovz3 coating is a common feature of the family. Size selection also depends on tool access and the radius required on the component. Establish the workpiece material and operation geometry before choosing spindle speed and feed rate.

3. Ball nose milling applications

The spherical tip allows surfaces and profiles to be machined using the tool radius. The CNC program must account for the actual tip shape so that the tool centre path corresponds to the intended workpiece geometry.

OperationSelection consideration
Surface and profile millingEnter the ball nose geometry and the correct radius R in the machining program.
Side millingCheck access to the wall and clearance for the shank and tool holder.
Slots and U-shaped channelsThe spherical tip produces a rounded bottom profile; match the tool radius to the channel geometry.
Helical hole millingUse a programmed helical path and a tool diameter appropriate for the required hole size.

Slotting, side milling and surface machining engage the cutting edges differently. Select cutting conditions for the planned operation. Also consider how chips will be removed from the cutting area.

4. Family dimensions

ParameterRange or available lengths
Cutting diameterØ1–20 mm
Ball nose radiusR0.5–10 mm
Shank diameterØ3–20 mm
Overall length50, 60, 75, 100 or 150 mm

These ranges describe the tool family. Select the specific combination of cutting diameter, radius, shank and length in the variant selector. The same ball radius can be available with different shank diameters or overall lengths.

Overall length L covers the complete tool, from the ball tip to the end of the shank. When planning access to the workpiece, account for the part held inside the holder and the actual tool overhang. Overall length does not specify the active cutting edge length.

The Ø5xR2.5x5Dx75L variant has a 10 mm cutting length. This is the cutting portion length for that size, separate from its 75 mm overall length.

5. Reading the size designation

The example Ø6xR3x6Dx50L describes four dimensions of the same end mill. Their order identifies the cutting diameter, ball radius, shank diameter and overall length separately.

Code elementMeaningExample value
Ø6Cutting diameter6 mm
R3Ball nose radius3 mm
6DCylindrical shank diameter6 mm
50LOverall tool length50 mm

Decimal values in the size names use a dot, for example R0.5. This designation means a ball radius of 0.5 mm. The number after R is a radius, so the corresponding cutting diameter is twice that value.

Tool holder selection: check the value before D. On smaller sizes, the shank may be larger than the cutting diameter. Check the cutting diameter and shank diameter separately.

6. Choosing a size for the workpiece and holder

  1. Choose the radius: match R to the required rounded feature or profile. The corresponding cutting diameter is 2 × R.
  2. Check the shank: compare D with the collet or holder bore size. Read the complete designation of the selected variant.
  3. Select the length: choose an overall length that provides access while keeping tool overhang as short as practical.
  4. Check clearance: account for the shank diameter and holder dimensions when approaching walls and recessed features.
  5. Compare all dimensions: before ordering, check cutting diameter, R, D and L together in the selector and variant card.

If a longer end mill is required, choosing L alone does not complete the selection. The overhang after clamping should correspond to the access needed. As overhang increases, matching speed and feed to the actual cutting conditions becomes more significant.

7. Preparing for milling

Before machining, prepare the tool clamping, workpiece fixture and a program matching the selected tool size. Select cutting conditions for the material, diameter, overhang and operation.

  • Limit overhang: extend the tool from the holder only as far as needed for the planned operation.
  • Adjust speed and feed: use appropriately reduced cutting conditions with longer overhang and check the cutting process.
  • Prepare coolant: use cutting fluid and a delivery method suitable for the workpiece material and operating conditions.
  • Control chips: provide chip removal, especially when machining a slot or recessed area.

A ball nose milling program must contain the correct tip radius. The selected size, the tool installed in the spindle and the geometry entered in the program must correspond before machining starts.

8. Frequently asked questions

What does Z2 mean?

Z2 identifies two cutting edges. This HYPERCUT family consists of two-flute ball nose end mills.

Does R3 mean a 3 mm diameter?

R3 means a ball radius of 3 mm. The corresponding cutting diameter is 6 mm.

Which coating does the tool have?

The tool has a multilayer Alnovz3 coating. Its body is made of solid carbide, also designated VHM.

Can it machine stainless steel?

Yes. Stainless steel is one of the main application groups, together with steel and cast iron. Select cutting conditions for the material grade and operation.

Which dimension determines holder size?

Shank diameter is shown before D. For example, 6D means a Ø6 mm shank. This dimension can differ from the cutting diameter.

Does 50L mean cutting length?

50L means an overall length of 50 mm. It covers the complete tool, including the shank, and does not designate cutting length.
