Product description
4-flute solid carbide T-slot end mill with DLC coating
For T-slots and undercuts · cutting diameters Ø2–12 mm
A solid carbide cutter with a disc-shaped cutting head and a reduced neck, designed for machining T-slots and undercuts. The cutter has four flutes, identified by Z-4. DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating is used for the applications listed below.
Select cutting diameter D and cutting thickness H, then check the shank, neck dimensions and overall length on the variant card. For a thickness-range option, specify one cutting thickness within the stated range.
1. Applications and workpiece materials
The cutter is intended for machining T-shaped slots and undercuts on CNC machines. The reduced neck provides clearance between the cutting head and the shank; consider both its diameter and length when matching the tool to the workpiece geometry.
| Material group | Application range |
|---|---|
| Non-ferrous metals | Aluminium, copper and brass. |
| Non-metallic materials | PLEXI, PVC, POM and PE plastics, and plywood. |
Select cutting conditions for the material, cutter diameter, cutting thickness and workholding. Spindle speed and feed rate depend on the specific application.
2. Construction and technical specifications
| Parameter | Value or description |
|---|---|
| Tool type | Solid carbide, shank-type T-slot cutter |
| Tool material | VHM — solid carbide |
| Coating | DLC — Diamond-Like Carbon |
| Number of flutes | 4 — designation Z-4 |
| Cutting diameter D | Ø2–12 mm, depending on the variant |
| Cutting thickness H | Specified in the variant name; for a thickness range, select a specific H value |
| Overall length L | 50 or 60 mm, depending on the variant |
| Shank and neck | Dimensions depend on the version and are shown on the selected variant card |
Check the product selector for diameter, thickness and length combinations. Not every diameter is offered in every length.
3. Fixed-thickness and thickness-range DLC variants
| Variant marking | Meaning |
|---|---|
| A single H value | The variant has the specific cutting thickness stated in its designation. Select it when that thickness matches the dimension required for the slot. |
| An H range with the ~ symbol | Select a specific cutting thickness within the stated range and enter it in the order notes. The range does not mean an adjustable-thickness tool or a set containing all thicknesses. |
| DLC suffix | Identifies the tool coating. This cutter family has 4 flutes. Read its dimensions from the designation and variant card. |
Compare complete designations: cutters with the same diameter may differ in thickness, overall length or neck geometry.
4. How to read the cutter designation
Example: Ø4x0.5Hx50L DLC means cutting diameter D = 4 mm, cutting thickness H = 0.5 mm and overall length L = 50 mm. All dimensions on the cards are given in millimetres.
The value after Ø is the cutting head diameter. H is its axial thickness; L is the overall tool length. The DLC suffix identifies the coating.
The abbreviated designation does not include every dimension. Check the shank diameter and neck dimensions separately on the card. Decimal points in names and decimal commas on cards have the same meaning: 0.5 mm = 0,5 mm.
5. Dimensions on the variant card
| Symbol and dimension | What to check |
|---|---|
| D — cutting diameter | Outside diameter of the disc-shaped cutting head. Match it to the slot geometry and access to the machining area. |
| H — cutting thickness | Axial thickness of the cutting head. For thickness-range variants, the card shows the range from which you select a specific thickness. |
| d — shank diameter | Diameter of the part held in the tool holder. Select the holder for this dimension; it may differ from cutting diameter D. |
| n — neck diameter | Diameter of the reduced neck behind the cutting head. Consider it when checking clearance between the tool and the workpiece. |
| l — neck length | Length of the section marked beside the reduced neck in the drawing. Read it together with the neck diameter. |
| L — overall length | Length of the complete tool. It is neither the cutting thickness nor the permissible cutting depth for one pass. |
In the table below the photograph, the neck is described as diameter × length. Letter case matters: D and d, as well as l and L, identify different dimensions. Use the labelled values, as the cutter photograph is not a scale drawing.
6. How to order a cutting thickness within a range
Thickness-range example: Ø6x0.5~6Hx50L DLC. This means a cutting diameter of 6 mm, a choice of cutting thickness H from 0.5 to 6 mm, and an overall length of 50 mm.
- Select the correct diameter and range. Check that the required thickness H is within the lower and upper limits of the selected variant.
- Enter the specific thickness in the order notes. For the example above, write “Cutting thickness H = 1.3 mm”. When ordering different cutters, match each requested thickness to its corresponding variant.
- Check all dimensions on the card. Also verify shank diameter, neck diameter and length, and overall length.
Thicknesses within the stated ranges can be specified in 0.1 mm increments. This is the selection increment when ordering, not a stated manufacturing tolerance. If the required dimension is absent from the selector or outside the listed range, contact us to check whether it can be ordered.
7. Selecting a variant for the workpiece and holder
- Start with the slot geometry. Compare diameter D and thickness H with the workpiece drawing and the planned machining operation.
- Check the space for the neck and shank. Read n and l from the specific variant card. Allow for clearance in the slot, around the workpiece and near the tool holder.
- Match the holder to shank diameter d. The cutting head diameter alone does not determine the required collet or tool holder size.
- Verify overall length L. Compare the values with the selected variant card before preparing the tool for use.
Use on CNC machines with a suitable spindle and holder. Consider the full outline of the cutting head, neck and shank, and tool access to the undercut.
8. Frequently asked questions
What does Z-4 mean in the product name?
Z-4 identifies four cutting flutes. DLC refers to the coating. Neither designation replaces dimensions D, H, d, n, l and L.
Does a thickness-range variant include a set of cutters?
No. The H range is used to select one specific cutting thickness. Specify the required value when ordering; the tool has that fixed, selected thickness.
Does the cutting diameter also specify the shank diameter?
Do not assume that the two are equal. Cutting diameter D and shank diameter d are separate dimensions. Check both values on the selected variant card.
Where can I find the complete dimensions of a cutter?
After selecting a variant, check its assigned card in the gallery. It shows cutting diameter and thickness, shank diameter, neck dimensions and overall length. For thickness-range cards, H is shown as a range.
