Product description
4-flute NaCo4 solid carbide end mill · VHM
Flat end · micrograin solid carbide · cylindrical shank
A four-flute end mill made from solid carbide (VHM) with a NaCo4 coating. Its flat end and helical cutting section are used for milling flat surfaces, machining the sides of a workpiece and cutting slots. The tool is intended for CNC milling machines and machining centres.
1. Applications
The end mill is used for machining steels, including carbon and stainless steel, in accordance with the material selection table below. Suitability differs between material groups. Consider the grade, heat treatment condition and hardness of the workpiece as well as the operation when selecting the tool.
| Operation | Application |
|---|---|
| Surface milling | Machining flat surfaces. |
| Side milling | Machining the sides and walls of a workpiece. |
| Slot milling | Milling slots, including U-shaped slots. |
| Hole milling | Machining a hole using a milling toolpath; this does not imply a recommendation for axial drilling with the end mill. |
2. Construction and specifications
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Tool type | Flat-end shank end mill |
| Tool material | VHM — solid carbide |
| Carbide structure | Micrograin, 0.4 µm |
| Number of flutes | 4 |
| Coating | NaCo4 |
| Cutting section | Helical |
| Shank | Cylindrical |
| Cutting diameter | Ø1–Ø20 mm, depending on size |
| Flute length | 3–70 mm, depending on size |
| Shank diameter | Ø3–Ø20 mm, depending on size |
| Overall length | 50, 60, 75, 100 and 150 mm, depending on size |
| Machines | CNC milling machines, machining centres and high-speed engraving machines suitable for milling |
The ranges in the table describe the product family. Not every diameter is available in every length. When selecting a size, check all four dimensions: cutting diameter, flute length, shank diameter and overall length.
3. Solid carbide and NaCo4 coating
The body and cutting section are made from micrograin solid carbide (VHM) with a grain size of 0.4 µm. VHM identifies the solid carbide construction. The tool has a NaCo4 coating; account for this designation when selecting an end mill for the workpiece material and operation.
Coating and tool material are factors in tool selection. Operating conditions also depend on diameter, flute length, tool overhang and workpiece material. The coating name alone does not specify spindle speed, feed or depth of cut.
4. Workpiece materials
| Material | Suitability |
|---|---|
| Carbon steel | Highly suitable |
| Stainless steel | Highly suitable |
| Ordinary steel | Conditional application |
| Alloy steel | Conditional application |
| Prehardened steel | Conditional application |
| Quenched and tempered steel; mould steel | Conditional application |
| High-hardness materials: 45–55 HRC | Highly suitable |
| High-hardness materials: 55–65 HRC | Conditional application |
| High-hardness materials: 65–70 HRC | Not recommended |
| Copper alloys | Conditional application |
| Heat-resistant alloys; titanium alloys | Not recommended |
| Cast iron | Not recommended |
| Aluminium alloys | Not recommended |
| Graphite | Not recommended |
| CFRP composites | Not recommended |
“Conditional application” requires checking the specific grade and its condition. The table does not provide cutting parameters. Do not transfer settings from carbon steel to stainless steel, or between different heat treatment conditions, without considering the actual machining conditions.
5. How to read the size designation
Example: Ø6x15x6Dx50L contains four dimensions in millimetres:
| Code | Meaning | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Ø6 | Cutting diameter | 6 mm |
| 15 | Flute length | 15 mm |
| 6D | Shank diameter | 6 mm |
| 50L | Overall length | 50 mm |
The second number identifies the length of the cutting section. The letter D identifies shank diameter, while L identifies the length of the entire tool. Overall length includes the cutting section and shank; it is not equivalent to permissible depth of cut.
Cutting diameter and shank diameter can differ. Select the collet or holder using the dimension marked D. A dot is the decimal separator in size codes: for example, Ø2.5 means a diameter of 2.5 mm. The photograph is illustrative; use the dimensions on the selected size card for tool selection and program preparation.
6. Mounting and runout checks
Check the runout of the mounted tool before cutting. If it exceeds 0.01 mm, correct it before use. Keep tool overhang from the holder as short as possible while maintaining access to the machining area.
Longer overhang requires reducing spindle speed, feed or cutting engagement. When selecting a long version, check flute length and actual tool extension as well as overall length. A greater L dimension does not mean that the entire length is a cutting section.
7. Operating conditions and cooling
Mist cooling or an air jet is recommended for machining steel. Select cutting conditions for the workpiece material, diameter, overhang and operation. No single spindle speed and feed setting applies to the entire range of sizes.
If unusual vibration or noise occurs during cutting, reduce spindle speed and cutting engagement until operation improves. The end mill is intended for machines designed for milling. Do not use it in bench drills, handheld drills or low-speed machines.
8. Frequently asked questions
Does every size have four flutes?
Yes. The number of flutes is 4; the dimensions vary between sizes.
Does 50L mean flute length?
No. 50L identifies an overall length of 50 mm. Flute length is the second number in the code and is listed separately on the size card.
Can I select a holder using only the cutting diameter?
Check shank diameter, marked D. On some versions it differs from cutting diameter.
Is this end mill recommended for aluminium?
No. The application table does not recommend it for aluminium alloys; select a tool suitable for that material.
What should I check when choosing a long version?
Check flute length, access to the workpiece and tool overhang. Reduce cutting conditions for increased overhang, and check runout before use.
