Product description
BallMill Z4-T — solid carbide ball nose end mill, TiSiN, 4 flutes
Cutting diameters Ø1–20 mm · ball radii R0.5–R10 mm · overall lengths 50–100 mm
BallMill Z4-T is a solid carbide ball nose end mill with a TiSiN coating and four flutes. Its spherical cutting end is intended for machining three-dimensional surfaces, contours and internal radii. The range includes sizes for fine details and larger profiled surfaces.
When selecting a variant, check cutting diameter, ball radius, cutting length, shank diameter and overall length. These dimensions describe different parts of the tool: radius is not diameter, and overall length does not specify cutting length.
1. Applications and workpiece materials
- 3D surface milling — guiding the cutter along successive tool paths to machine three-dimensional surfaces.
- Contouring and internal radii — milling shapes that require a spherical cutting end.
- Roughing and finishing — use depends on part geometry, workpiece material and selected cutting conditions.
The range covers applications in steel, stainless steel, tool steel, pre-hardened steel and cast iron. Other applications include hardened materials, superalloys and heat-resistant alloys, aluminium, copper, brass, PLEXI, PVC, POM and PE plastics, and plywood. Selection for a specific grade and material condition requires consideration of the machining conditions.
2. Technical specifications
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Tool type | Solid shank ball nose end mill |
| Series | BallMill Z4-T |
| Tool material | VHM — solid carbide |
| Coating | TiSiN |
| Number of flutes | 4 |
| Helix angle | 35° |
| Cutting edge finish | Polished |
| Cutting diameter | Ø1–20 mm, depending on the variant |
| Ball radius | R0.5–R10 mm, depending on the variant |
| Cutting length | 2–40 mm, depending on the variant |
| Shank diameter | Ø3–20 mm, depending on the variant |
| Overall length | 50, 60, 75, 80 or 100 mm, depending on the variant |
| Shank type | Cylindrical |
The ranges cover the whole series. Available combinations of diameter, shank and length are shown in the variant selector. Not every cutting diameter is available with every overall length.
3. Ball geometry and radius R
Radius R describes the spherical end of the cutter. In this series, cutting diameter is twice the ball radius: Ø6 mm corresponds to R3 mm, and Ø2.5 mm to R1.25 mm. This is the radius of the ball end, not the corner radius of a corner-radius end mill.
4. Reading the variant code
Example: Ø6xR3x12x6Dx75L. The code contains five dimensions:
| Code element | Meaning | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Ø6 | Cutting diameter | Ø6 mm |
| R3 | Ball radius | R3 mm |
| 12 | Cutting length | 12 mm |
| 6D | Shank diameter | Ø6 mm |
| 75L | Overall length | 75 mm |
5. Selecting the tool for the job
- Start with the part geometry. Match the cutting diameter and ball radius to the contour, internal radii and access to the surface.
- Check cutting length. This describes the cutting section and is separate from overall tool length. Do not substitute the value ending in L.
- Match the holder to the shank. The number before D indicates clamping diameter. In the smallest sizes, the shank can be larger than the cutting diameter.
- Select reach for the operation. Consider access for both the cutter and holder. Choose a longer variant when required by the machining geometry.
- Set conditions for the actual material. Select speed, feed, depth and cooling or lubrication for the workpiece grade, operation and system rigidity. The cutter is intended for a milling machine or machining centre.
6. Frequently asked questions
Does R3 mean a Ø3 mm cutting diameter?
R3 means a ball radius of 3 mm. The corresponding cutting diameter is Ø6 mm.
Does the Ø3 mm cutter always have a Ø3 mm shank?
No. This series includes Ø3 mm cutters with Ø3 mm and Ø4 mm shanks. Check the number before D in the full code.
Does 75L mean 75 mm cutting length?
75L specifies overall length. In the example Ø6xR3x12x6Dx75L, cutting length is 12 mm.
What information is needed for tool selection?
Specify the workpiece grade and hardness, shape being machined, required radius, tool reach and available holder. For special sizes, provide the complete set of dimensions.
