HNR HSS and SNR / SNL spring-steel boring bars for internal threading
A family of boring bars for internal threading with replaceable IR inserts. Every variant is one individual boring bar with a defined shank diameter, overall length, hand, insert size and minimum bore diameter. The cutting insert is not included. After a variant is selected, the gallery displays its exact bilingual technical card.
The listing combines several body sizes in one selector so that code, geometry and commercial quantity remain connected. Always read the selected card rather than transferring a dimension from a nearby button.
Application
The holder carries a replaceable internal-threading insert inside a bore. Selection begins with the available bore diameter and clearance for the body, then continues with the required shank, reach, IR insert size and pitch range. The selected shank diameter must match the machine holder or collet.
The family includes small holders for bores from 6.8 mm, standard 11IR and 16IR holders, and larger 22IR bodies. No single variant covers every diameter and pitch. Minimum bore diameter is a selection parameter in its own right and must not be inferred from shank diameter alone.

Differences between HNR, SNR and SNL
| Family | Body material | Hand | Range in this listing | Key condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HNR | HSS — high-speed steel | right | Ø5–32 mm shanks, 90–300 mm lengths | do not substitute spring steel |
| SNR | spring steel | right | Ø8–32 mm shanks, 125–300 mm lengths | match insert and bore data |
| SNL | spring steel | left | Ø8–25 mm shanks, 125–250 mm lengths | confirm left-hand operation |
The family letters do more than identify a catalogue line. They distinguish body material and hand. SNL is left-hand; HNR and SNR are right-hand. A dimensionally similar SNR is not a substitute when the process requires SNL direction.
Within each family, body proportions, length, shank diameter, insert pocket and required bore clearance change. Each stock therefore uses its own exact card rather than a photograph from another code with a changed caption.
How to select a variant
1. Determine the hand. Choose HNR or SNR for a right-hand setup and SNL for a left-hand setup. Do not infer the hand only from a small thumbnail; it is stated in the variant name and card.
2. Check the shank diameter. It must fit the holder or collet. Changing insert size does not compensate for an incompatible shank.
3. Compare overall length with the required reach. A longer body reaches deeper, but it should be clamped with only the overhang required for the operation. The card states nominal length even when the shank intentionally continues beyond the image edge.
4. Check the minimum bore. This is the geometric lower limit stated for the variant. The actual process must also allow for thread form, entry, run-out and safe retraction.
5. Match insert and pitch. 06IR, 08IR, 11IR, 16IR and 22IR are not interchangeable sizes. The holder pitch range must cover the intended thread and the insert itself must have the correct form and pitch.
Selecting an IR insert
Insert size appears in both the variant name and its card. Small HNR bodies also use 06IR and 08IR; standard families include 11IR and 16IR; larger versions use 22IR. A different insert size is not compatible simply because it has a similar thread profile.
After size, select thread form, pitch, grade and execution for the workpiece and cutting conditions. These properties belong to the insert and do not change the body material. For example, HSS in an HNR card describes the boring bar body, not the replaceable insert.
Before installation, clean the pocket, inspect the clamping screw and seat the insert without chips beneath its support faces. Do not force an incompatible size or opposite-hand insert arrangement into the pocket.
Dimensions and ranges
| Parameter | Whole-family range | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Shank diameter | Ø5–32 mm | diameter clamped in the machine holder |
| Overall length | 90–300 mm | nominal length of the selected body |
| Minimum bore | Ø6.8–37 mm | specific to the selected SKU |
| Insert size | 06IR / 08IR / 11IR / 16IR / 22IR | must match the pocket |
| Pitch range | up to 1.5; 1.75; 2.5; 3.5 mm; or 4–6 mm | read the selected variant card |
The table describes the complete listing, not one universal bar. Exact values appear in the selector and card after the SKU is chosen. Do not combine the minimum bore from one code with the length or insert pocket from another.
The special 16 mm neck variant has its own card. Neck diameter and clamped shank diameter can be different dimensions, so both fields must be read rather than reducing the code to “Ø16”.
Installation and preparation
Clamp as much of the shank as practical and leave only the overhang required to reach the cutting area. Before running, verify that the body, insert, screw and pocket clear the bore entrance. Pay particular attention to the smallest diameter and to the retraction path after threading.
Tool-axis and cutting-edge height influence insert geometry. Perform a non-cutting clearance check after setup. A controlled move or manual spindle check can confirm direction, space and programmed position before a full-depth pass.
Cutting data must be selected for the insert, thread form, workpiece, clamping rigidity and machine. This listing does not prescribe one speed or pass strategy for every application. Long overhangs require especially careful stability assessment.
After use, clean the pocket and inspect its support faces. A damaged screw, contaminated seat or incorrectly positioned insert can cause runout and edge displacement even when the holder code is correct.
Scope of supply
You receive: 1 × boring bar in the selected variant.
The IR cutting insert is not included and is sold separately.
Increasing quantity in the basket adds more pieces of the same selected variant. Technical images do not indicate a two-holder set. Every current variant card shows one sale unit; when a source photograph contained two bodies, the card was prepared from a single exact variant.
Compare the selector code with your requirement before ordering. In particular, verify SNR/SNL hand, HNR versus spring-steel material, insert size and overall length. Machine tooling, surrounding equipment and inserts shown for context are not included unless separately added to the basket.
Frequently asked questions
Is the cutting insert included?
No. The listing supplies one boring bar; the IR insert is purchased separately.
Are HNR and SNR the same body in a different colour?
No. HNR uses an HSS body, while SNR belongs to the spring-steel family.
What is the difference between SNR and SNL?
SNR is right-hand and SNL is left-hand.
Will a 16IR insert fit an 11IR variant?
No. Insert size must match the stated pocket.
Is shank diameter the same as minimum bore?
No. They are separate values and both are stated for each SKU.
Why can I not see the end of a long shank?
The shank intentionally continues beyond the frame so the photograph does not imply a shorter body.
Do two tools in a source photograph mean a two-piece set?
No. Current variant cards show one piece and the sale unit is one selected holder.
Where is the exact combination shown?
In the selector button and the card displayed after selection, which pair code, material, hand, shank, length, insert, bore and pitch.
