Product description
1. CAT pull stud and the geometry required by the spindle
A pull stud screws into a toolholder. Its head engages the spindle gripping mechanism. Selection includes the complete head and neck profile, thread, lengths, angle, passage path and sealing arrangement.
Separate reference geometries are presented below. Nominal values are for comparison with the drawing of the part required by the machine; they are not measurements of a specific stud. The CAT40 or CAT50 name alone does not establish its type.
2. Short CAT, long BT-CAT and metric Mazak types
| Geometry | How to distinguish it |
|---|---|
| Short CAT/ANSI profile, LDA reference | Compare its own lengths, head and inch thread designation. |
| Long BT-CAT/MAS profile | It has a separate drawing and different proportions. A shared inch thread does not make it a short LDA profile. |
| Metric Mazak-CAT profile | M16 or M24 identify a different type; they do not replace an inch UNC thread. |
Do not combine short CAT dimensions with long BT-CAT or metric Mazak dimensions. Holder size, a similar name and one shared diameter are not enough to substitute parts. Family names do not establish a specific stud's conformity to a standard or machine.
3. Nominal dimensions of the short LDA profile
Lengths and diameters in this table are in millimetres. M retains the complete inch thread designation. The values belong only to the LDA drawing with D1/D2/L/L1/L2/H/H1 symbols; they do not assign that profile to a part from its variant name alone.
| Reference profile | D1 [mm] | D2 [mm] | M | L [mm] | L1 [mm] | L2 [mm] | H [mm] | H1 [mm] |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LDA-30 | 9.78 | 13.21 | 1/2"-13 | 27.94 | 11.68 | 8.13 | 2.54 | 1.01 |
| LDA-40 | 12.45 | 18.8 | 5/8"-11 | 38.1 | 16.26 | 11.18 | 3.05 | 1.52 |
| LDA-45 | 15.37 | 23.88 | 3/4"-10 | 45.72 | 20.83 | 14.73 | 4.06 | 2.03 |
| LDA-50 | 20.83 | 28.96 | 1"-8 | 58.42 | 25.4 | 17.78 | 5.08 | 2.54 |
D1 is the neck diameter and D2 the maximum head diameter. The table does not establish the gripping angle, bore path, O-ring or construction. Identify those features separately.
4. Separate G and θ designations in short and long drawings
The designations below belong to separate geometries using G and θ symbols. A profile code refers to a drawing; it does not prove the bore or sealing type of a specific part.
| Reference profile | Drawing | Thread G | Threads per inch | Angle θ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CAT40C-45 | Short, B/C/E/F symbols | 5/8"-11 | 11 | 45° |
| CAT50C-45 | Short, B/C/E/F symbols | 1"-8 | 8 | 45° |
| BT-CAT40C-45 | Long BT-CAT, type B | 5/8"-11 | 11 | 45° |
| BT-CAT50C-90 | Long BT-CAT, type B | 1"-8 | 8 | 90° |
Read θ from the correct drawing. Do not transfer 45° automatically to a profile marked 90° or to the LDA table, which does not establish that angle.
The separate tables do not explicitly establish the unit of the L/B/C/E/F numbers. Do not treat them as millimetres or inches, or convert them into the LDA table. Only the confirmed thread designations, thread counts and angle are shown here. Length comparison requires a drawing with an explicit unit.
5. Symbols and the correct measurement points
| Drawing | Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| LDA | D1 / D2 | Neck diameter / maximum head diameter. |
| LDA | L | Overall length from the head front to the end of the threaded portion. |
| LDA | L1 | Head front to the support face on the thread side of the flange. |
| LDA | L2 | Rear boundary of the head to that same flange support face. |
| LDA | H / H1 | Local axial distances at the flange marked in that drawing. |
| LDA | M | Inch thread designation; the number after the hyphen is threads per inch. |
| Separate B/C/E/F drawing | B | Head diameter. |
| Separate B/C/E/F drawing | C / E | Head front / rear boundary to the same flange support face. |
| Long BT-CAT type B | F | Neck diameter in its own drawing. |
| Separate short B/C/E/F drawing | F | A repeated symbol for a neck diameter and an axial distance; retain the correct arrow and measurement point. |
| Separate B/C/E/F drawing | G / θ | Inch thread designation / angle marked in that drawing. |
L1 and L2 locate the head relative to the flange; they are not thread lengths. Symbols from different drawings do not form one common table: use the values and measurement points of the selected profile. Do not substitute F for D1 based only on a similar number.
6. Check passage and O-ring separately
Bore path and sealing are separate features. A visible opening in the head face does not establish a through passage. No through passage does not mean there is no bore at all; a blind or another bore may be present.
An O-ring does not prove a through passage, and a through passage does not establish the number or position of rings. Compare the passage required by the coolant system and the seal contact position, groove and ring presence. A/B or C letters in a profile name do not replace that check.
Nominal external tables do not assign bore, sealing or construction details to a selected size. Do not infer these features from the head shape or thread alone.
7. Comparing the required pull stud
Start with the complete drawing of the part required by the spindle. Compare in this order:
- The geometry: short CAT/LDA, long BT-CAT/MAS or a separate metric profile.
- The complete thread designation and the threads per inch or pitch required by the drawing.
- The head and neck diameters and the angle of the correct gripping surface.
- The overall length and head position relative to the flange, from the same measurement points.
- The passage path and separate sealing requirements.
5/8"-11 is not an M16 designation, and 1"-8 is not M24. The numbers 11 and 8 are not metric thread pitches. Do not replace an inch type with a metric type based on a similar diameter. A match in one parameter does not establish the complete profile.
8. Short FAQ
Does CAT40 identify one universal pull stud?
No. Short CAT, long BT-CAT and metric Mazak types are separate geometries.
What does 11 mean in 5/8"-11?
Eleven threads per inch, not an 11 mm pitch.
Are L1 and L2 thread lengths?
No. In the LDA drawing they locate the head relative to the flange support face.
Can a number without a unit be converted immediately?
No. Establish the unit and correct symbol in the complete drawing first.
Does an O-ring establish a through bore?
No. Compare sealing and passage path separately.
