Product description

Thread forming tap - toolThread forming tap - Type 1 / Type 2 geometry

Thread forming tap (form tap / roll tap) made to JIS. The tool does not cut the material - it forms the thread through cold plastic deformation. No chip is produced. Made of HSSE-PM (powder-metallurgy high-speed steel) with a coating of TiCN.

Applications

  • threading materials with good formability: aluminum and its alloys, copper, brass, low-carbon steel, stainless steel
  • threading blind and through holes without producing chips
  • series production on CNC machines where removing chips from the hole is difficult
  • forming threads through plastic deformation of the material

Thread forming requires an appropriate pre-drilled hole diameter and lubrication. The catalog recommendations table does not list forming-tap applications for cast iron, hardened steel, tool steel, cast steel, titanium alloys or nickel alloys. A coating alone does not establish suitability for these materials.

Coatings and forming-tap applications

CoatingSelection principle
TiN (gold)The coating does not extend the recommended workpiece materials or replace the correct hole diameter and lubrication.
TiCN (gray-blue)The coating does not extend the recommended workpiece materials or replace the correct hole diameter and lubrication.
TiAlN (anthracite)The coating does not extend the recommended workpiece materials or replace the correct hole diameter and lubrication.

This product is coated with TiCN. Select the workpiece material for the forming-tap application; provide the correct pre-drilled hole and lubrication.

Tap drill hole - why larger?

A forming tap does not remove material; it displaces it, so the pre-drilled hole must be larger than for a cutting tap. Example: for M6×1, a cutting tap requires a 5,0 mm hole, while a forming tap requires 5,55 mm. An undersized hole can damage the tool. The diameters in the table above are the recommended values for the listed sizes.

FAQ

How does a forming tap differ from a cutting tap?
A forming tap does not cut - it forms the thread through cold plastic deformation of the material. No chip is produced.

For which materials?
For materials with good formability, such as aluminum, copper, brass, low-carbon steel and stainless steel. The catalog table does not list applications for cast iron, hardened steel, tool steel, cast steel, titanium alloys or nickel alloys.

What pre-drilled hole diameter?
Larger than for a cutting tap - the exact diameters are given in the size table.

Coolant?
Provide appropriate lubrication during thread forming. Select the lubricant and machining conditions for the workpiece material. The coating does not replace lubrication.

What is powder steel (PM)?
PM denotes manufacture by powder metallurgy. This tool is made of HSSE-PM, or powder-metallurgy high-speed steel.
