Product description

DLC-coated solid carbide thread mill — single form

Metric threads M0.8–M20 • cylindrical shank • CNC machining

A DLC-coated solid carbide cutter for milling metric threads. A single thread-forming profile is located near the end of the working section. The tool follows a programmed helical path. Select the size by the thread designation, pitch and required overall tool length.

The range includes standard and extended versions. Check the cutting diameter, working length and shank diameter on the selected variant card. The M designation refers to the thread size; it is not the tool shank diameter.

Applications and workpiece materials

The DLC version is intended for threading aluminium and the other non-ferrous materials and plastics listed below. Select cutting conditions for the particular alloy, thread depth and tool overhang.

MaterialApplication
Aluminium and aluminium alloysMilling threads in aluminium, aluminium extrusions and die-cast aluminium alloy parts.
Copper and brassThread machining in copper and brass.
Magnesium and zinc alloysThreading components made from these alloy groups with an appropriate machining process.
PlasticsThread milling in plastics, including Bakelite.

The tool can machine internal and external threads, including right-hand and left-hand threads. The CNC program determines the direction and path of the operation. Blind holes can be machined when the tool geometry and prepared hole provide room for the required movement.

Construction and specifications

ParameterSpecification
Tool typeThread mill with a single thread-forming profile along its axis
Tool materialVHM — solid carbide
CoatingDLC
Thread typeMetric, M designation
Thread designation rangeM0.8–M20, depending on the selected variant
ShankCylindrical; its diameter is stated on the variant card
Overall length50–100 mm, depending on the selected variant
Cutting diameter and working lengthDimensions specified for the selected size on its variant card

The working section and shank form a single solid carbide tool. The coating corresponds to the product version in this listing. Sizes with similar thread designations can have different working lengths or shank diameters. Check both dimensions before selecting the toolholder and preparing the program.

Single-form geometry and thread generation

Single form means one axial level of thread-forming geometry near the tool tip. It does not mean one circumferential cutting edge or one flute. This distinction matters when selecting and programming this tool family.

The thread is generated as the tool follows a helical path. For a single-start metric thread, the axial advance per orbit corresponds to the thread pitch. The machine and program must support helical interpolation.

Single-form geometry allows the pitch to be selected in the program within the limits of the cutter geometry. Use the variant designation when selecting the tool. Changing the program does not change the physical cutting diameter, working length or thread-forming profile.

How to read the size and tool dimensions

Example designation: M3x0.5x50L. The code states the thread size, pitch and overall tool length. All linear dimensions are in millimetres; the dot in the designation is a decimal separator.

Code elementMeaning in this example
M3Metric thread with a nominal diameter of 3 mm
0.5Thread pitch of 0.5 mm
50LOverall tool length of 50 mm

For this example, the cutting diameter is Ø2.4 mm, the working length is 9 mm and the shank diameter is Ø4 mm. The cutting diameter therefore differs from both the nominal thread diameter and the diameter held in the toolholder.

Dimension on the cardPurpose
Cutting diameterDefines the cutting-section diameter needed for tool selection and toolpath preparation.
Working lengthDefines the length of the working section. Use it when checking access to the threading area.
Shank diameterDetermines the toolholding size and must match the toolholder.
Overall length LCovers the entire tool, including the shank. It is not the permissible thread depth.

Selecting a variant for the component

  • Check the thread on the component drawing. Read the nominal diameter and pitch, then select the corresponding variant designation.
  • Check access to the thread. Consider the cutting diameter, working length, hole depth and clearance for the toolholder.
  • Select the toolholding diameter. Use the shank diameter on the card, rather than the number following M.
  • Select overall length for the required reach. Choose an extended version when access requires it, while keeping tool overhang as short as possible.

The 75L or 100L designation gives the overall length, not the length of the thread-forming section. An extended cutter can have a different working length from the standard version with the same M designation and pitch. Compare the entire variant card rather than selecting only by the final number in the code.

Toolholding and checks before machining

  • Check tool runout. If it exceeds 0.01 mm, correct the toolholding before cutting.
  • Keep overhang short. Extend the tool only as far as required for the operation, taking access and clearance into account.
  • Reduce loading at greater overhang. Adjust spindle speed, feed or depth of cut accordingly.
  • Check the tool and holder path. Verify entry, cutting and exit movements before starting the operation.

The cutter is intended for thread milling on CNC machine tools. It uses programmed orbital and axial movement. Select the toolholder, overhang and program with reference to all four dimensions shown on the variant card.

Cutting conditions and vibration

Select spindle speed, feed and depth of cut for the workpiece material, cutting diameter, working length and tool overhang. Do not transfer settings directly from a short version to an extended version merely because they have the same thread designation.

If unusual vibration or noise occurs, reduce the cutting feed until conditions become more stable. Check runout and tool overhang. Where overhang is excessive, adjust the cutting conditions in accordance with the guidance above.

Frequently asked questions

Does M3 mean a 3 mm shank?
No. M3 denotes a metric thread with a nominal diameter of 3 mm. The shank diameter and cutting diameter are stated separately on the variant card.

Can the tool machine internal and external threads?
Yes, with a suitable program and verified tool access. Right-hand and left-hand threads can also be machined.

Does 100L mean that a 100 mm deep thread can be produced?
No. It is the overall tool length. Assess the usable reach from the working length, overhang, hole geometry and toolholder clearance.

Does single form mean one flute?
No. It describes the arrangement of the thread-forming profile along the tool axis, not the number of cutting edges or flutes around its circumference.
