Product description
VERSAMILL TiSiN solid carbide end mill, Z4
For steel, stainless steel and cast iron - machining workpieces up to 55 HRC
Solid carbide end mill with four flutes and a TiSiN coating for contouring, slotting and side milling. The VERSAMILL series covers cutting diameters of Ø1–20 mm and overall lengths of 50–200 mm, allowing the tool to be selected for the component dimensions and required machining reach.
When selecting a size, compare four dimensions: cutting diameter, cutting length, shank diameter and overall length. Check the complete designation and the dimension card for the selected variant before ordering.
1. Workpiece materials and applications
VERSAMILL TiSiN Z4 is intended for the following workpiece groups. Select the tool for the specific material grade, workpiece hardness and operation.
| Workpiece material | Application |
|---|---|
| Steel | Milling carbon and alloy steels within the workpiece-hardness range up to 55 HRC. |
| Stainless steel - INOX | Machining stainless-steel components with cutting conditions selected for the material grade and setup. |
| Cast iron | Milling cast-iron components, selecting the end-mill diameter and length for the geometry to be machined. |
2. Tool construction and specification
The end-mill body is made of VHM solid carbide. The four cutting edges are designated Z4. The tool has a TiSiN coating and a helical cutting section.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Series | VERSAMILL |
| Tool type | Solid end mill |
| Tool material | VHM - solid carbide |
| Coating | TiSiN |
| Flute count | 4 - Z4 |
| Helix angle | 35° |
| Shank | Cylindrical; diameter depends on the selected variant |
| Cutting diameter | Ø1–20 mm, depending on the variant |
| Overall length | 50, 60, 75, 100, 150 or 200 mm, depending on the variant |
| Cutting length | Listed in the designation and on the selected variant card |
| Workpiece hardness | Up to 55 HRC |
3. Milling operations
Select the end mill for the component geometry and planned toolpath. The series covers the following applications:
| Operation | Intended use |
|---|---|
| Contouring | Machining the outline and perimeter of a component along a programmed toolpath. |
| Side milling | Machining walls and side surfaces using the cutting section of the end mill. |
| Slotting | Milling slots to suit the component geometry and planned toolpath. |
| Helical interpolation | Milling holes along a helical path with a suitable tool diameter and CNC toolpath. |
Select cutting conditions for the end-mill diameter, workpiece material, operation and actual overhang. Slotting and side milling require separate selection of cutting conditions.
4. Selecting a variant
- Start with the cutting diameter. Match it to the slot width, contour or other dimensions of the workpiece. The first value after Ø identifies the cutting diameter.
- Check the cutting length. This is the length of the cutting section. Compare it with the operation requirements separately from the overall tool length.
- Match the shank diameter to the tool holder. Check the third dimension in the designation. The shank diameter can differ from the cutting diameter, including within the same series.
- Select the overall length for the required reach. Account for clamping and access to the machining area. Use the shortest practical overhang that allows the operation to be completed.
Current size combinations are shown in the variant selector. After selecting a variant, check its card with the four dimensions.
5. Reading the dimension designation
Example designation: Ø8 × 20 × 8D × 60L. All dimensions are in millimetres.
| Part of the designation | Meaning | Value in the example |
|---|---|---|
| Ø8 | Cutting diameter | 8 mm |
| 20 | Cutting length of the working section | 20 mm |
| 8D | Shank diameter held in the tool holder | 8 mm |
| 60L | Overall tool length | 60 mm |
In this designation, the letter D after the third value refers to the shank diameter, while L after the final value refers to the overall length. Cutting length is the second value in the designation.
Variant images are illustrative diagrams. Select the size using the stated dimensions; the proportions of the illustration must not be used to measure the tool.
6. Extended versions and clamping
Versions with greater overall length allow the tool reach to be selected for the machining location. Overall length and cutting length are separate dimensions - check both before selecting a long end mill.
- Use the shortest practical overhang. Limit the length projecting from the holder to the reach needed for the operation.
- Check clamping before machining. Use a tool holder suited to the shank diameter and check the runout of the clamped tool.
- Account for overhang when selecting cutting conditions. With a longer tool, select the cutting load for the rigidity of the complete setup: machine, tool holder and workpiece.
- Respond to vibration and unusual noise. Stop machining, check the clamping and cutting-edge condition, and adjust the cutting conditions before resuming.
The end mill is intended for milling machines and machining centres with suitable tool and workpiece clamping. Select the size and toolpath for the capabilities of the machine.

8. Frequently asked questions
Is VERSAMILL TiSiN Z4 suitable for stainless steel?
Yes. Stainless steel is within the application range of this series. Select the diameter, length and cutting conditions for the component and material grade.
Is the cutting diameter always the same as the shank diameter?
These values can differ. When selecting a tool holder, check the shank dimension: it is the third value in the designation, followed by D.
Does 200L mean a cutting length of 200 mm?
200L means the overall end-mill length. Cutting length is listed separately as the second value in the variant designation.
What does Z4 mean?
Z4 means four flutes, or four cutting edges.
What information is needed to select cutting conditions?
Provide the workpiece grade and hardness, complete end-mill dimensions, operation and planned overhang. This information allows the cutting conditions to be selected for the actual setup.
