A VMD shank holder connects an indexable drill head to the machine-side mounting. Select the version to suit the shank diameter, mounting bore and design of your drill head. The variants also differ in length L and the construction of the mounting section.

1. Shank holder or extension?

This product family includes shank holders and extensions. A holder has a machine-side shank and a socket for connecting the drill head. The YXZ-70 extension is an additional connecting component and requires a suitable mounting holder.

Your selection refers to the component specified by the variant: a holder or an extension. The variant card shows the mounting component itself and identifies its geometry and dimensions.

2. Dimensions and designation

The example C40-22-100 denotes a Ø40 mm shank, a Ø22 mm mounting bore and length L = 100 mm. The outside body diameter is a separate dimension shown in the drawing; it is Ø45 mm in this example.

Read the extent of dimension L from the line on the card. In these illustrative drawings the line excludes the machine-side shank. Do not convert photograph proportions into the length of the entire component. The mounting bore diameter specifies the mounting connection; it does not establish the diameter or path of a hole along the entire component.

Card dimensions apply to the selected variant. Photographs are illustrative and not to scale: select the length using the stated dimensions rather than the picture proportions.

3. Versions and drill-head compatibility

An identical mounting bore diameter does not automatically mean the same mounting version. Check the flange, family designation and drill-head requirements. Flanged and standard versions may share the same nominal shank and bore designation.

For DXZ, check both the drill-head size and its upgraded version. Matching nominal diameters with another version does not establish mechanical compatibility. Select available lengths and configurations using the size selector.

4. YXZ-70 extension

YXZ-70 has a Ø40 mm shank, a Ø40 mm mounting bore and a Ø80 mm front-body diameter as indicated in the drawing. The number 70 in the family name is not the diameter of this section. Length L depends on the selected variant.

The extension requires a suitable mounting holder. Check the connection geometry and the diameters of both mating components. A shared Ø40 mm value alone does not establish compatibility with every holder of that diameter.

5. Selecting the correct variant

Identify the drill-head version. Distinguish standard, flanged and upgraded versions requiring DXZ.
Compare the mounting bore and shank. Select the bore for the drill-head connection or matching assembly component, and the shank for the machine-side mounting.
Check the compatibility range. For flanged, C50 and DXZ versions, use the associated drill-head diameter range.
Read length L and body diameter. Use the labels in the selected variant drawing. For YXZ-70, also select a suitable mounting holder.

6. Frequently asked questions

Do two variants with a Ø16 mm mounting bore have the same connection?

Not always. The flanged C40 version is dedicated to Ø45–50 mm drill heads and differs in construction from the standard version. Identify it from the picture and card description as well as the nominal bore size.

Does DXZ fit every VMD drill head within the stated diameter range?

DXZ-70 and DXZ-80 are intended for upgraded drill heads within the ranges in the table. The drill-head version is part of the selection.

Can the overall length be read from the photograph?

No. The photographs are illustrative. Read the L value from the selected variant card and check the extent indicated in the illustration using the endpoints of its dimension line. Assessing the overall assembly length requires the dimensions of its mating components.
