Product description

SK30 SK40 SK50 pull stud – geometry and type

1. What an SK pull stud is

A pull stud screws into a toolholder. Its head engages the spindle gripping mechanism. Select the complete part profile and thread together with the required passage and sealing arrangement.

SK30, SK40 and SK50 identify the size family. Selecting a specific stud also requires the head and neck diameters and the functional lengths.

2. Holder designation and stud profile

DIN 69871 is a designation relating to the toolholder. Establish the required pull-stud profile separately from the drawing and spindle requirements.

Read A, B and any additional letters with the documentation for the specific type. Do not assign a coolant passage or O-ring from a letter alone. Compare the features of the selected part separately from its type name.

3. Reference nominal dimensions

The table lists nominal external dimensions of the reference profiles. Use it to compare with the drawing of the required pull stud. Dimensions are in millimetres; M retains the thread designation without adding a pitch. The table does not specify the bore path or sealing arrangement.

4. Reading the symbols

SymbolMeaning in this table
DDiameter of the cylindrical pilot near the thread
D1Neck diameter below the gripping head
D2Gripping-head diameter
MThread designation; check pitch in the documentation for the required part
LOverall length from the head end to the end of the threaded portion
L1Head front to the support face at the flange on the threaded side
L2Rear boundary of the head to that same support face

L1 and L2 locate the head relative to the support face. They are not thread lengths. These symbols apply to this table; the same letters in another drawing may use different measurement points.

Compare thread pitch and gripping-surface angle with the drawing of the required part. Neither follows from M12, M16 or M24 alone, or from the overall length.

5. Axial passage and blind bore

A through passage connects both ends of the stud. A blind bore ends inside the part. A type without a through passage may still have a blind or other bore, so its path must be identified.

An opening visible in the head face alone does not prove a through passage. For through-spindle coolant, check passage continuity and its connection to the holder. The external head diameter does not specify the bore diameter or depth.

6. O-ring and sealing position

The passage and O-ring are separate features. A ring does not automatically mean a through passage, and a through passage does not establish the presence of a seal.

Compare the presence, number and position of rings and their contact face with the required sealing arrangement. An external groove and a seal inside a bore require the correct contact location to be checked. The words with O-ring alone do not specify all these features.

7. Selecting a stud for the spindle

Start with the drawing of the stud required by the machine. Compare in this order:

  1. The thread, thread pitch and pilot diameter.
  2. The head and neck diameters, overall length and head position relative to the support face.
  3. The angle of the correct gripping surface, as shown in the drawing.
  4. The passage path, O-ring presence and sealing position.

A match in one dimension, such as M16 or L54, is not enough to substitute profiles. Use the same measurement points as the required part drawing for each length and angle. Select the corresponding passage and sealing arrangement.

8. Short FAQ

Does every SK40 pull stud have the same profile?
No. The size family must be considered with the dimensions and spindle requirements.

Does an opening in the head face mean a through passage?
No. Identify the bore path rather than only its visible inlet.

Does the letter B or an O-ring specify the passage?
No. Read the type designation with its documentation and check the passage and sealing arrangement separately.
